Elder Dallin H Oaks speaks at the Asia Pacific 2008 Conference of the J.Rueben Clark Law Society Speaking at the second annual J. Rueben Clark Law Society conference for the Asia Pacific Region on Friday 30 May 08, he urged them to stay positive, do their best and always remain hopeful. He reminded them of Paul’s counsel to Timothy “But godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Tim 6:6), and encouraged them to be content in the work they are doing for good. Elder Oaks, a graduate of Brigham Young University (1954) and of the University of Chicago Law School (1957), formerly practiced and taught law in Chicago. He was president of Brigham Young University from 1971 to 1980, and a justice of the Utah Supreme Court from 1980 until his resignation in 1984 to accept his calling to the apostleship. During his address to the conference Elder Oaks shared experiences that influenced his life throughout his 30 years of practicing law, ranging from his law student days through to serving on the Utah Supreme Court. The attendees included first-year law students, lawyers, judges, magistrates and their wives from the Asia Pacific Region. Also present were Elders Condie, Baxter and Sorenson of the New Zealand Area Presidency. For some there was an extra benefit to the conference. Brother Brad Frost a Young Single Adult from Auckland Papatoetoe Stake and a second-year law student said he was previously unaware that so there were so many other Young Single Adults studying law. Brother Frost said he was thrilled to have fellow students who shared his values. He said he was looking forward to networking and also learning from the professional brethren and sisters who were speaking and leading discussions during the weekend conference. After his address Elder Oaks mingled with participants for a short time before his departure to Tahiti to preside over a stake conference there.
