Fiji Latter-day Saints
10 November 2009

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Suva donated blood for the Colonial War Memorial (C.W.M.) Hospital Blood Bank this week.

As part of the Church’s ongoing service to Fiji communities, the drive was organized to help the blood bank stockpile sorely needed supplies to assist those undergoing surgery, cancer patients and accident victims.

According to the Church’s director of public affairs in Fiji, Willie Kwansing, “We had many donors including friends, not of our faith, who participated in the drive.”

"I didn’t know how difficult it was for them to get blood donors.  We were grateful for the chance to assist."

Kwansing added that the Blood Bank staff were very friendly and expressed thanks to all those who donated blood especially those who donated for the first time.

The manager for Fiji National Blood Services, Amitesh Ram, said that if they had 20 donors in a day, they considered that a good result. "So to get more than double that amount was great for us," he said.

"Each blood donation can help save three lives," Amitesh said. "So we encourage anyone who wants to donate blood to visit the friendly staff at the C.W.M. Hospital Blood Bank, or support any organized blood drive in the community."
